The GPIB Standard

The GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus) standard is based on the HP-IB instrumentation interface bus, developed by Hewlett-Packard in 1965. This standard, also called IEEE 488, defines a 16-line bus that can connect up to 15 devices in parallel on a communications link.

This chapter provides a brief introduction to GPIB devices. It includes the following sections:

Name

Description

Controllers, Talkers and Listeners

Describes the GPIB devices: controllers, talkers, and listeners.

GPIB Commands

Presents the GPIB commands transmitted when the GPIB system operates in command mode.

Polling

Describes the types of polling performed (serial or parallel) after a GPIB device initiates a service request.

Signal Lines

Explains the signal lines, including data, handshake, and control lines, that carry messages.
