Test Connections

Q: How does my PC find and identify PCI and PXI modules installed in my test system?

A: When a PC starts up, the Plug-and-Play Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) scans the PCI bus to determine what devices are currently in the system. The PCI Controller queries each combination of bus device and function numbers for a corresponding Device ID and Vendor ID. If the scan finds a device, the BIOS reads the configuration space for required resources from the device and memory range, IO ports, DMA, and IRQ accordingly. When Windows boots, it accesses this data to discover any new hardware devices, and if it finds any, it will try to install the correct device driver.
